A late arrival or early departure changes what value means. At midnight, the cheapest room can become expensive if its shuttle has stopped, the hotel name maps to the wrong entrance, or the property is beside the wrong Shanghai airport. At dawn, an airport-connected room can be worth more than a newer room that requires a taxi and a generous time buffer.
The practical answer
For Pudong Airport, choose Da Zhong when eliminating the transfer is the priority. Choose Holiday Inn Express when you prefer a more standardized limited-service stay and your flight fits the confirmed shuttle plan. For Hongqiao Terminal 1, choose IntercityHotel instead. None of these is a universal Shanghai airport hotel: the correct airport and terminal come before price, photos or brand.
First check the three letters on your ticket
Shanghai has two major airports. Pudong International Airport uses the code PVG; Hongqiao International Airport uses SHA. They are not neighboring terminals. A bargain near Hongqiao does not solve a pre-dawn departure from Pudong, and an inexpensive Pudong room can create the same problem for a Hongqiao flight.
Then check the terminal. Da Zhong is designed around access to Pudong Terminals 1 and 2. Do not compare room rates until those mismatches are eliminated. For the remaining options, compare the final total with the same cancellation rules and meal inclusions. Add any taxi cost, but also value the sleep and time lost while waiting for a transfer.

For an early flight, it removes road traffic from the calculation.

At SHA Terminal 1, compare neither of those—use IntercityHotel as the relevant value option. The most practical hotel is the one that still works when trains stop, the flight is delayed and you are tired.
